After several years of targeting big Redear and Bluegills I finally slowed down to study the habits of these elusive fish. By slowing down and learning the cycle that these fish go through, especially during spring, but all year for many people. I found quickly that where I was catching several good fish every year there were dragonfly casings on the stakebeds and trees that hung in the water. After studying closer I also realized that while the yellow flowers, at least here on Kentucky Lake and especially Barkley, were great spots early they were also great after they died. The reason, I believe, is that the dragonfly larva as well as other terrestrials, are using the dead stems to get to the surface to emerge into adulthood.

This usually happens as the water temperatures rise as summer moves in. I noticed that I caught spawning Redear, shellcrackers, in 5 to 6 feet of water. Then, after the spawn was over, I would catch them in 8 to 10 inches of water. I thought that it was just late spawners up shallower than the others, nope. I finally kept a couple of shellcrackers that had big bellies like a spawner, then examined their stomach contents, and guess what I found? Dragonfly larva.

The Slab Dragon Panfish and Trout Bait was born. These baits are made with both salt and scent. They are super soft, so they are easily engulfed as you crawl them over those gravel bottoms. Don't overlook the open areas in a protected pocket because these emergers are crawling all over as they crawl to the tree limbs, stake beds, and other options to climb up and emerge. This bait has added not only a new way to fish but also an extended season for Redear. By targeting those shallow bays with a lot of gravel and trees and other means for the dragonfly larva to use to crawl out of the water, you can drag the Slab Dragon slowly on the bottom, and believe me, in the summer, just after spawn, Redear or Shellcrackers switch their meal from snails to dragonfly larva. If you are looking for the best crappie bait that shows up on Garmin Livescope and other forward facing sonar, this is it. The Li'L TUFFY Swimbait can be fished in shallow cover or the deepest creek channels to catch big slab crappie. Forward facing sonar has become a very big part of crappie fishing. The Li'L TUFFY Swimbait can be rigged weedless either using a slider type jighead or a Texas rig using a EWG hook and a bullet weight. I like to rig the Li'L TUFFY Swimbait to crappie fish with the Garmin Livescope by using an exposed hook roundheaded jighead.

The Li'L TUFFY is a tough swimbait. With the strip of mylar down the middle of the bait you can use a keeperless jighead and by having the hook through the mylar you pull on the mylar's full length, keeping the bait from tearing. There is also a tunnel through the Li'L TUFFY swimbaits with two holes through the bait at the end to allow air to escape. This lets you squirt scent gel into the hole in back of the swimbait slowly releasing scent. with the scent inside the swimbait body it is protected and will last a long time. (See Videos) The Li'L TUFFY Swimbait is fast becoming a hot crappie bait but it is also a great swimbait for smallmouth and largemouth bass as well as white bass.

The LiL TUFFY Swimbait for crappie has took off like a rocket. With many suggestions and tips from customers one of the most common is "when are you going to sell a pre-rigged LiL TUFFY Swimbait?" Well, here it is.

The pre-rigged LiL TUFFY comes in four sizes. 1/32 oz for pitching into those shallow water stakebeds and treetops where big crappie hide in the spring. The light head allows you to slowly work the bait through the brush and you best be ready because those big crappie come from nowhere to attack this bait.

I like the 1/16 oz head for all around casting and fishing for those crappie a little deeper. I use the 1/16 oz head even in 20 foot of water but when the wind gets up I go to the 1/8 oz pre-rigged LiL TUFFY to get it down there where summer and winter crappie live.

The LiL TUFFY has proven itself on big smallmouth bass as well and the 1/16 oz head is my go to when casting to early season smallmouth and during the fall smallmouth bite. I have customers that also use it for strolling to catch open water bass. I have never done any strolling for bass, but plan to soon.

I have several big time crappie anglers that use the LiL TUFFY Swimbait to drop on roaming crappie and have requested a 1/4 oz head for this awesome crappie catching technique. So, I have begun to make 1/4 oz heads and will be offering them here and not just making them custom for some of my biggest customers.

The Pre-Rigged LiL TUFFY Swimbait is finally here by popular demand. Many customers asked for a pre-rigged Tuffy so I am now offering it in the store. Tie one on and go fishing. The LiL TUFFY Swimbait is one tough bait and will last for many fish catches, it ain't just another plastic bait. The mylar strip inside keeps the hook from tearing the bait and the wire keeper on the Tuffy Head Jigheads help even more. I have customers that have bragged of catching 100 or more crappie on a single bait.

I like to use the 1/32 oz Tuffy Head jighead when fishing shallow cover. It's light enough to work easily through cover without sinking too fast and getting hung up. It also allows you to work your bait slowly, if that's what's needed.

I use the 1/16 oz Tuffy Head tungsten Jighead when fishing deep brush, as deep as 25 feet. Once at the desired depth it's easier to work through brush or bring over an open water crappie. I will go to 1/8 oz Tuffy Head when the wind is kicking.

I don't drop on crappie very often but some of my LiL TUFFY customers do. They have requested a 1/4 oz jighead for this technique so I made them and am now offering it in the our lineup.

The 1/32 oz and the 1/16 oz Tuffy Heads are tungsten with premium hooks, sharp and stout.

The 1/8 oz and the 1/4 oz I pour myself and are lead. If demand is great enough for these sizes I will get them in tungsten as well so let me know if that is something you would like.

I created the Hairy Cricket to fish for giant Redear Sunfish and Bluegills. I’ve found that it also catches lots of crappie and catfish and even a few bass. The Hairy Cricket is just a representation of the many bugs that swim around in the lakes and rivers we fish. I like to tip the Hairy Cricket with a small piece of worm. The Minner Critter is made for spider-rigging for crappie. I have just recently started spider-rigging myself after purchasing a War Eagle pontoon. Spider-Rigging has taken a back seat to single pole livescope fishing of late. As I have started to learn more about spider-rigging with my pontoon boat, that happens to have livescope, is that spider-rigging is still a great way to catch crappie with or without livescope. Here on Kentucky Lake the numbers of crappie is improving every year and spider-rigging works great for those big roaming crappie. Another great way to catch crappie spider rigging is to use livescope to target brush piles. I was already tying tinsel hooks to add color to my minnows while spider-rigging then I met Jerry Gross.

This is the story on the Minner Critter. As an outdoor writer I am fortunate to fish with some great names in the fishing industry. On a trip to Mississippi I was paired with a legend in the crappie fishing and tournament scene Jerry Gross. In addition to Jerry being well known as a crappie angler he and his wife Debbie also gained crappie world recognition with their jig company Meat Getter Jigs. During our conversation on that day in Mississippi after photographing Jerry with his 3.29 pound crappie he caught while spider rigging on Lake Washington his jig company came up.

As a bait and tackle business owner myself I was interested in anything Jerry had to say. After telling me he sold his business to Steve Green at Bear Creek Baits he informed me that Steve might be interested in selling the Minner Critters that came with the business. After contacting Steve a deal was made and I was able to get my hands on the last of the original Meat Getter Jig Minner Critters.

I have about a 1000 Minner Critters in their original packaging but plan to tie them myself going forward. My wife Tammy has even said she would like to tie them herself, sounds good to me. Jerry used numbers for his colors and I think I will do the same, not sure I want to come up with that many names.

Over the past 6 or 7 years I have dedicated my spring to chasing big Redear sunfish, also known as Shellcrackers among other names. I have been fortunate enough to catch some really big Redear. Redear are bottom feeders. They, unlike other species look down for their food. This is predominately snails, emerging larva, crawfish and even mussels where available.

There are times when the Redear might be looking up a little more than usual. This is when insects like dragonflies crawl up tree limbs, grass, and stakebeds. They do this to emerge into adults and need to get out of the water to shed their skin known as an exuvia.

During this time and when around vegetation, overhanging tree limbs that is in the water and my favorite stake beds, I use a bobber. To be honest I first began attaching a small bobber to my line anytime I was fishing cover. I did it to keep from getting hung up so easily. Working my Hairy Cricket Jig in and around cover was made much easier using a bobber.

After several years, as I made a point to study the Redear Sunfish, I learned that after the spawn these fish will linger in the shallows, oftentimes even shallower than they spawn, to gorge on emerging insects. While the main reason I use a bobber is to keep from getting hung up in cover I believe that the Redear is watching these stems, stakes and limbs to pick off theses emergers as they attempt to get to the surface.

The system I devised to "cover more water" was anytime I was fishing gravel banks and clean bottom I always fished the Hairy Cricket on the bottom. However, when I came across some grass or woody cover I always put my little bobber on the line to fish it. When done I slipped it off and slide it back into my pocket and continued down the bank fishing my jig on the bottom. I started calling this little bobber my POCKET BOBBER and that's what I call it today. The POCKET BOBBER is small, Redear are a little sensitive to pressure and will spit the bait out when felt. The POCKET BOBBER imparts very little pressure on the jig as the Redear takes it under. I use it also for bluegills when they are shallow. The POCKET BOBBER is bright and easy to see, even for its small size. It is the perfect bobber for finessing big Redear and big bluegills off the bed or out of cover.
